Neuromuscular disorders can affect the nerves that control your voluntary muscles, such as arms and legs. Your nerve cells send messages that control these muscles. When the cells become unhealthy, communication between your nervous system and muscles breaks down. As a result, your muscles weaken, which can lead to twitching, cramps, aches and pains and joint and movement issues. Many neuromuscular disorders are genetic or an immune system disorder can cause them.
Some of the neuromuscular disorders ANNP physicians treat include:
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Spinal muscular atrophy
